Swan Hill crosses the Murray River with approachable Chardonnay and smooth, fruit-led reds.
Melon and peach fruit in a soft, approachable white.
Syrah.
Smooth, medium-bodied red with generous fruit.
The registered GI extends across both sides of the Murray rather than stopping at the state line. The climate is hot and relatively dry, with riverine calcareous soils and conditions slightly cooler than Murray Darling. Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are useful starting points. Swan Hill remains a separate origin from its larger neighbour, and a wine’s regional claim depends on its grape source rather than a winery’s postal address.
