About Washington

Washington wine country combines a sunny inland vineyard world with the cooler maritime landscapes around Puget Sound. East of the Cascade Mountains, Columbia Valley links many smaller American Viticultural Areas, from Yakima Valley’s varied sites to Red Mountain’s focused red wines and Ancient Lakes’ Riesling. Walla Walla Valley brings Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah across the Washington–Oregon border, while Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope and the hills around Prosser reveal further contrasts. Lake Chelan and Naches Heights offer different combinations of elevation, soils and growing conditions. An AVA describes grape origin rather than a prescribed blend or winemaking method. Look for the smaller appellation, vineyard and producer alongside the grape to make this broad state wine landscape more specific.
