Alto Moncayo is a boutique winery founded in 2002 in Borja, in Aragón’s Campo de Borja D.O., focused entirely on Garnacha. It works with old native mountain Garnacha vines, many 40 to 100 years old, planted on the slopes of Moncayo and in the sierras of Ainzón, Fuendejalón, and Tabuenca. Poor, stony, highly permeable soils, southwest exposures, altitude, and a slow ripening cycle shape a distinctive local terroir. The winery emphasizes strict vineyard selection, old-vine preservation, and native clones, aiming for highly individual wines with fruit, minerality, volume, and persistent aromatics. Key figures mentioned include chief winemaker José Luis Chueca Sancho and Sergio Chueca, a third-generation Garnacha-focused enologist.
