Producer

Mateus Nicolau de Almeida

Portugal

Mateus Nicolau de Almeida is a fifth-generation, family-run Douro producer working with his wife Teresa Ameztoi, sister Mafalda and senior family winemaker João Nicolau de Almeida. At Quinta do Monte Xisto and through the Adega do Sável natural wine project, the family explores diverse Douro vineyards and sub-regions with experimental vinifications. Their vineyards are certified organic and farmed using organic and biodynamic practices, while winemaking follows natural methods and respects the local ecosystem. Their wines include the Trans-Douro-Express, Eremitas and small-quantity Curral Teles ranges, alongside Port from the biologically farmed, old Vinha dos Trinta vineyard, planted with 30 grape varieties on schist soils.
