Loewen is a family-owned Mosel estate in Leiwen, led by Christopher Loewen with his father Karl-Josef in the eighth generation. Rooted in vineyards first acquired in 1803 during the Napoleonic secularization, the estate focuses on light, characterful Mosel Riesling from steep slate sites and very old vines, many ungrafted. Its most notable holding is the Maximin Herrenberg parcel planted on its own roots in 1896, regarded as one of the oldest Riesling vineyards in the world. Farming is labor-intensive on steep slopes, with hand work in key parcels and no mineral fertilizer noted for Herrenberg. In the cellar, Loewen follows a traditional, minimal-intervention approach with spontaneous fermentations, a gravity-flow cellar, and no additives or temperature control.
