Founded in 1970 by Sydney lawyers James Halliday, John Beeston and Tony Alberts, Brokenwood is a family-run producer in Pokolbin, in New South Wales’s Hunter Valley. Its vineyards lie in the foothills of the Brokenback Mountain Range, with clay-based soils, and the winery also sources fruit from McLaren Vale, Padthaway and the Yarra Valley. Brokenwood focuses on premium Australian fruit, particularly low-yield Shiraz and Hunter Semillon. Both the winery and vineyard are certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia and use minimal inputs. Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs has led the cellar since 1982, bringing long-term continuity to the producer’s quality-focused style.
