Domaine Roland Schmitt

France

Domaine Roland Schmitt is a family estate in Bergbieten, Alsace, founded by Roland Schmitt and now run by Anne-Marie Schmitt with their sons Julien and Bruno. The domaine works notable local terroirs including Altenberg de Bergbieten Grand Cru and Glintzberg, on marl-gypsum soils with dolomitic stones. Certified organic by Ecocert for many years and now converted or converting to biodynamic farming, the estate emphasizes biodiversity, environmental stewardship, and respect for heritage. Vineyard work is manual, with hand harvesting, whole-cluster slow pressing, indigenous yeasts, lees aging, and minimal sulfur for a natural, low-intervention style. Roland Schmitt also played a role in Altenberg de Bergbieten being included among Alsace’s first Grand Cru sites in 1983.
