Jansz, in Tasmania, was founded in 1975 as Heemskerk Wines and takes its name from explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman. Since 1997 it has been owned by the Hill-Smith family. The estate follows a vineyard-centric philosophy, with the winemaker walking the vines daily and focusing on natural climate and soil health. Its vineyards comprise 23 one-hectare blocks on pure, red, free-draining basalt soils. Jansz specialises in traditional-method sparkling wines, known as Méthode Tasmanoise, made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Its partnership with Champagne house Louis Roederer began in 1986 and led to Tasmania’s first premium vintage sparkling wine.
