Monterrei is a Galician Denomination of Origin established administratively in 1994 and founded in 1996. Its vineyards and wineries include family estates, small producers, cooperatives and larger commercial projects, giving the appellation a diverse profile. Terras do Cigarrón originated as a cooperative and has collaborated with Bodegas Martín Códax since 2009, while Bodegas Vionta is owned by Grupo Freixenet. Winemaking figures associated with Monterrei include Miguel Tubío and José Luís Mateo.
