Italy

Nino Negri is a historic winery in Chiuro, in Lombardy’s Valtellina, founded in 1897 and now the flagship estate of Gruppo Italiano Vini. It is rooted in Valtellina’s mountain viticulture, working mainly with Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca, from steep terraced vineyards supported by ancient dry-stone walls. The cellar is housed in the fifteenth-century Palazzo Quadrio, reflecting a long local history. The estate emphasizes authenticity of place, with Alpine conditions, strong diurnal shifts, and rocky soils shaping the wines. Its approach combines tradition with innovation, including manual harvests on difficult slopes and projects such as high-altitude aging at 3,000 meters for slower maturation and freshness. Environmental sustainability is a stated focus, though no formal certification is cited. Casimiro Maule led winemaking until 2017, followed by Danilo Drocco.
