Elio Altare is a family-run estate in La Morra, Piedmont, founded by Elio Altare and today led within the family by Elio, his wife Lucia, and daughter Silvia, while Elena runs a wine import business in Germany. The winery is known as a pioneering force in modern Barolo, shaped by Elio’s shift in the 1970s toward lower yields, careful vineyard selection, shorter macerations, and an emphasis on elegance, finesse, and terroir expression. Farming follows organic and low-intervention principles, avoiding synthetic chemicals and using copper and organic manure; fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts with minimal sulphur. The estate is especially noted for single-vineyard Barolos from sites such as Arborina, Cannubi, Brunate, and Cerretta, alongside Barbera, Dolcetto, and Langhe Nebbiolo.
