Ponte Mouchão is a historic, family-owned estate in Alentejo, established in 1901 and run by the Reynolds family, with David Ferreira as director and Hamilton Reis overseeing winemaking. Its wines are made traditionally: red grapes are fermented with whole bunches in open stone lagares and foot-trodden, while other notes mention wild fermentation in stainless steel and ageing in large wooden vats or 500-litre oak barrels. The estate emphasizes responsible vineyard care, including practices intended to maintain healthy bees, and harvests its cork grove on a nine-year cycle. It is also investing in energy efficiency, renewable energy and lower-carbon production. Critics have recognized Mouchão as one of Alentejo’s iconic wineries, known for distinctive, powerful yet elegant wines.
