Lozärn is based on Doornbosch farm in Bonnievale near Robertson in South Africa’s Western Cape, where wines are handcrafted within the Lucerne agricultural enterprise. The family’s farming heritage began in 1923, when Kathleen “Kay” Smuts and her husband purchased land in the Robertson Valley; Lucerne has since passed through four generations and is now operated by Grant Smuts and his sons. Launched in 2017 following its first harvest in 2014, Lozärn honours Kay’s pioneering spirit and blends European heritage with South African tradition. Winemaker Salome Buys-Vermeulen, a B Agric graduate, leads the cellar. The range focuses on Carménère—including South Africa’s first single-vineyard example—and Bordeaux-style blends.
