Capitoni is a family-run estate in Pienza, within Tuscany’s UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia, where the Capitoni family has farmed since purchasing Podere Sedime in 1968. Marco Capitoni now owns and operates the estate and makes the wines, continuing a hands-on tradition that includes manual vineyard work and personal care of the fields, vines, and cellar. The vineyards are planted mainly to Sangiovese, with Canaiolo, Colorino, and Merlot, on marine-derived sandy and clay soils. Farming uses minimal phytosanitary products and organic fertilizers, with organic certification underway. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentations and varied maturation—including French oak and terracotta amphorae—express the character of each vintage while balancing inherited manual practices with modern knowledge.
