Bodegas Protos is a historic cooperative producer based in Peñafiel in Ribera del Duero, founded in 1927 by local winegrowers and regarded as the region’s first winery. Still community-owned, it brings together local families, viticulturists, engineers, and oenologists, with Marilena Bonilla leading the technical and winemaking team. In Ribera del Duero, Protos farms Tempranillo on poor limestone, loam, and sandy-loam soils at varied altitudes, using manual harvests, parcel selection, precision viticulture, and differentiated micro-plot vinification. Notes also cite certified organic vineyards and the launch of organic wines in 2020. The estate emphasizes quality, environmental respect, traceability, and ongoing research, including work on Tempranillo clones and native yeasts. Its long history is closely tied to the birth and development of Ribera del Duero.
