Producer

Sylvain Martel

France

Sylvain Martel runs a micro-production in the Bessay lieu-dit of Juliénas, Beaujolais, where he farms a 1.3-hectare parcel of 45-year-old Gamay vines organically and at low yields. Working with co-operator and winemaker Anne-Sophie Dubois, he hand-harvests the grapes and uses whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, a 10-day maceration, and nine months of aging in neutral barrels. The resulting wines are intended to express a style distinct from Beaujolais Nouveau. Ownership remains with Martel, while Dubois is his winemaking partner. Approximately 3,600 bottles are produced annually, reflecting a highly focused, artisanal operation.
