Founded in 2008 by Marta Castrillo and César Maté, Marta Maté is a small, owner-operated winery in Ribera del Duero. The founders are also the winemakers, overseeing a quality-focused approach based on low yields and limited production. Vineyards are farmed ecologically, with organic and biodynamic parcels, hand-harvesting, horse-drawn tools, and no chemical fertilizers, biocides, or tractors. The estate promotes soil microorganisms, uses insect hotels and dry-stone walls, and undertakes hillside reforestation and native-species planting. These practices have reduced pest and disease pressure by 95%.
