Clos Pegase

United States

Founded in the early 1980s by Jan and Mitsuko Shrem, Clos Pegase is a Napa Valley estate spanning Calistoga and Carneros, now owned by Adair Family Wines and reopened in 2026. Its identity is closely tied to the meeting of wine, architecture and art: Michael Graves designed the landmark winery, which includes extensive caves carved into a volcanic knoll and a Cave Theater. The estate focuses on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from cool Carneros and Cabernet Sauvignon from Calistoga, supplemented by sourced grapes from the former Mitsuko’s Vineyard. Winemaking has benefited from figures including André Tchelistcheff, Chris Howell and Paul Hobbs; current winemaker Robin Akhurst brings international experience from Burgundy, New Zealand, Australia and Napa Valley. A drought-tolerant Heritage Garden reflects an emphasis on water conservation, though no sustainability certification is noted.
