Bien de Altura is Carmelo Peña Santana’s personal, artisan wine project in Gran Canaria’s high-altitude San Mateo area, operating under D.O. Gran Canaria. He works with indigenous varieties including Listán Negro, Listán Prieto and native white grapes, from ungrafted, traditionally trained vines on volcanic soils at roughly 1,100–1,400 metres, including old vineyards. The project aims to recover Gran Canaria’s native varieties and winemaking potential while expressing individual sites and the island’s volcanic landscape. Viticulture follows organic and biodynamic principles with minimal chemical inputs; cellar work is carried out by hand, using native yeasts and low sulfur. The resulting wines are described as fresh and less alcoholic, with distinct parcel expressions such as Sansofi and Tidao.
