Gilles et Catherine Vergé

France

Gilles et Catherine Vergé is an estate-run domaine in Viré-Clessé, southern Burgundy, owned and operated by Gilles and Catherine Vergé. Working with old-vine Chardonnay, including vines up to 135 years old, they farm organically and biodynamically, with permaculture, hand-worked vineyards, and a strong focus on biodiversity. The couple left the local cooperative in 1998 to run their own estate, with Gilles handling vinification and both serving as growers and winemakers. Their approach is firmly natural and low-intervention: native-yeast fermentations, no synthetic chemicals, no additives, no added sulfites, no fining, no filtration, and no oak aging. They are members of the SAINS association, and both hold leadership roles within it.
