Alto Wine Estate

South Africa

Alto Wine Estate is a historic, red-wine-only producer on the steep northern slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, South Africa. With more than a century of winemaking and only five winemakers in its history, including two father-and-son combinations, the estate combines heritage and tradition with evolution and innovation. Its vineyards, planted on decomposed granite soils at 100–500 metres, benefit from late-afternoon sun and cooling sea breezes. Winemaker Bertho van der Westhuizen emphasizes terroir, fruit quality and minimal intervention, producing rich, powerful wines with exceptional fruit purity. The focused portfolio includes Alto Rouge, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, the Estate Blend and limited-release M.P.H.S. The estate is currently undergoing renovations, with tastings temporarily hosted at Klein Alto.
