Il Poggione

Italy

Tenuta Il Poggione is a historic, family-owned estate in Montalcino, Tuscany, founded in the late 19th century by Lavinio Franceschi. Today managed by his descendants Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi, it is one of Montalcino's largest wineries, with over 125 hectares of vineyards. The estate combines tradition with innovation, focusing on sustainable practices like limited phytosanitary use, diversified farming, and solar panels. Vineyard work is largely manual, including green harvest. The winery, built in 2004, is entirely underground for natural temperature and humidity control, featuring submerged cap fermentation and aging in French oak casks seasoned for at least four years. Winemaking is led by the accomplished father-son team of Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci. The vineyards, including the historic Vigna Paganelli cru planted in 1964, benefit from varied altitudes and a favorable microclimate, producing structured, age-worthy Sangiovese with elegance and purity.
