Oregon wines span much more than one grape or valley. Willamette Valley is a compelling starting point for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and traditional-method sparkling wines, with smaller AVAs revealing volcanic, marine-sedimentary and windblown vineyard soils. Dundee Hills, Ribbon Ridge, Eola-Amity Hills and the Chehalem Mountains offer different routes into that northern landscape. Farther south, Umpqua Valley, Rogue Valley and Applegate Valley broaden the palette with Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and aromatic whites from suitable sites. An American Viticultural Area identifies where grapes grow; it does not prescribe the grape or winemaking style. Follow the smaller AVA, vineyard and variety on the label to explore Oregon’s contrasts, and distinguish a town’s tasting rooms from the actual vineyard origin.
