Montsant DO is a separate appellation from Priorat DOQ. Its vineyards occupy a varied landscape of limestone, clay, granite and slate settings, so it is misleading to describe the whole denomination as slate country. Garnatxa and Carinyena lead the red-wine story, with cooler and warmer sites bringing different balances of fragrance, ripeness and structure.
