Vale de Mata

Portugal

Vale de Mata operates the Quinta do Vale Meão estate in Lisboa, owned by Francisco (Vito) Olazabal, a descendant of Doña Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. Its vineyards span slate, granite and alluvial gravel soils, including a small, old parcel of steep, rocky vines shaped by an Atlantic-influenced maritime climate. The estate combines winemaking heritage associated with Nicolau de Almeida with regenerative, biodynamic and organic farming, precision viticulture, manual vineyard work and hand-harvesting. Sustainability measures include composting, wildflower plantings, chicory inter-cropping, onsite water recycling and recycled glass bottles. The estate is certified through Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and participates in the Wines of Alentejo Sustainability programme.
