Domaine des Sanzay

France

Domaine des Sanzay is a family-owned estate in Varrains, Saumur-Champigny, with a history spanning several generations. Antoine Sanzay, the sixth generation, took over in 1999 and has bottled the entire harvest at the domaine since 2014. The vineyards are planted mainly to Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc on tuffeau limestone and clay-limestone soils, with varied parcels expressing different terroirs. Farming respects soil life and biodiversity: herbicides and synthetic fertilizers are avoided, soils are worked, and treatments use sulfur, copper, and plant extracts; the estate is Ecocert-certified organic. Grapes are hand-harvested, and Antoine employs native-yeast fermentations, gentle infusion maceration, and parcel-by-parcel vinification. The domaine also produces traditional-method sparkling wines entirely on site, including brut nature cuvées.
