Producer

Iona

South Africa

Iona is a boutique producer in South Africa’s Elgin Valley, based on a former apple farm at 420 metres altitude. Founded and owned by Andrew Gunn, the estate operates a shared-ownership model involving its workers and 20 partner farms. Its vineyards are managed organically and biodynamically, with a focus on soil health and natural pest control using resident geese, although the practices are not formally certified. Winemaking is led by Rob Macdonald, Gunn’s son-in-law, using a minimal-intervention approach that includes natural fermentations and temperature-controlled stainless steel.
