Gran Cerdo is a boutique, independently owned Rioja label founded and run by winemaker Gonzalo Grijalba. Its Tempranillo comes from vineyards planted around 1988 on calcareous clay soils in north-eastern Spain. The vines are farmed organically and biodynamically, without pesticides, herbicides, or other heavy chemicals, although the practices are not formally certified. Winemaking is natural, vegan, and low-intervention, reflecting a hands-off approach to expressing Rioja fruit. The label was established after Grijalba was denied a bank loan and remains a small, family-run operation producing natural wine in limited quantities.
