Selbach-Oster

Germany

Selbach-Oster is a family-owned estate in Zeltingen on the Mosel, run by Johannes and Barbara Selbach with their son Sebastian. Drawing on a family connection to Mosel wine that spans 400 years, the estate farms steep Devonian slate slopes, including old and in part ungrafted vines, with sustainable and organic methods, though no formal certification is noted. The focus is firmly on Riesling, alongside small amounts of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Their approach is low-intervention: careful manual work in the vineyards, low yields, slow wild-yeast fermentations, and ageing on the lees in stainless steel or old fuder casks. The wines emphasize site expression, clarity, minerality, ripe fruit, and freshness, ranging from delicate dry Rieslings to noble sweet wines.
