Esporão is a family-owned producer based in Alentejo, centred on Herdade do Esporão near Reguengos de Monsaraz, with the Roquette family still in second-generation leadership under João Roquette. Founded in 1973, it has grown into a major Portuguese wine project while maintaining a strong focus on responsible farming. Its vineyards at Herdade do Esporão are fully certified organic, with a broader commitment to organic production across its estates. Practices include composting, cover crops, animal grazing, hedgerows, bat habitats, water management, and natural pest control. Winemaking under Sandra Alves and David Baverstock emphasizes quality, balance, and expression of place, with some wines fermented and aged in concrete to preserve freshness and purity.
