Martin Muthenthaler is a very small, sole-proprietor estate in the high Spitzer Graben of Austria’s Wachau. A self-taught grower-winemaker, Martin left the Domäne Wachau cooperative in the early 2000s to work independently, personally managing steep, organically farmed terraces. His certified-organic wines come from single-vineyard sites including Bruck, Schön, and the monopole Cru Viesslinger Stern. Rejecting the traditional Wachau classification system, he focuses instead on balance and restrained alcohol. Produced in very limited quantities and sold exclusively outside the Wachau, the wines are rare and sought after.
