Nikolaihof

Austria

Nikolaihof in Mautern, Lower Austria, is Austria’s oldest wine estate, with a history spanning nearly 2,000 years. Owned and run by the Saahs family—Nikolaus (Niki) and Christine Saahs—the estate farms 22 hectares of vineyards on primary rock soils, following strict Demeter biodynamic and organic practices without herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic sprays. Wines ferment spontaneously and age in large old oak casks in the historic Roman cellar, sometimes for up to 20 years. Alongside the winery, the estate operates a wine tavern, restaurant, guesthouse, cosmetics line, and shop, and has received EU funding for modern cellar facilities, reflecting a blend of deep tradition and contemporary capability.
