South Africa
Fryer's Cove is a cool-climate producer on South Africa’s remote Cape West Coast, based in Doringbaai and centred on Bamboes Bay, the country’s smallest demarcated ward. Its vineyards lie roughly 500–540 metres from the Atlantic, in red sandy, seashell-rich soils over limestone, where fierce winds, cold sea mist and very low rainfall shape concentrated, maritime wines with flinty, salty minerality. Sauvignon Blanc is the principal focus, alongside Pinot Noir and other Cape West Coast varieties. The winery operates from a converted crayfish factory on the harbour and uses icy seawater from the Atlantic to cool fermentation tanks, reflecting its philosophy of ingenuity and minimalism. Founded by Jan van Zyl and Wynand Hamman, the formerly family-run estate has been owned by DGB Wine since 2020; winemaking is now led by Liza Goodwin.
