Virna Borgogno

Italy

Virna Borgogno is a family-owned estate in Barolo, in the heart of Piedmont’s Langhe, founded in 1950 by Enrico Borgogno and today run by sisters Virna and Ivana Borgogno. Virna, proprietor and head winemaker, is noted as Italy’s first woman to graduate in oenology, while Ivana oversees administration and marketing. Farming is organic-certified from the 2019 harvest, following conversion since 2016, with sustainable vineyard work that avoids herbicides and chemical fertilizers, limits intervention, and emphasizes biodiversity. The estate focuses on Nebbiolo, with Barolo as its flagship, including wines from Cannubi Boschis, Preda Sarmassa, and other Barolo sites. The winemaking style is described as traditional, with careful ageing in large oak casks and selected smaller barrels.
