Rocca di Montemassi

Italy

Rocca di Montemassi is a large, integrated wine farm at the foot of the ancient village of Montemassi in Southern Tuscany’s Maremma. Owned by Zonin1821 since 1999, it combines viticulture with olive oil, cereals, vegetables, experimental horticulture and livestock, reflecting a broad contemporary farming tradition. Its vineyards focus on Vermentino and Sangiovese, alongside international varieties, with wines shaped by maritime breezes, strong diurnal variation and mineral, iron- and clay-rich soils. The estate completed conversion of its production activities to organic farming in June 2021, with partial certification, and follows a permaculture-inspired approach centred on biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Its sustainability programme is recognised through EQUALITAS certification and annual reporting. Alessandro Gallo serves as director and winemaker; the estate also offers tastings and a museum of rural civilisation.
