Ellena Giuseppe

Italy

Ellena Giuseppe is a family-run estate in La Morra, Piedmont, where three generations work together under Matteo Ellena, who has led the winery with his father since 2009. The family bought the farm in 1966 after working as sharecroppers, and with the 2009 harvest returned to vinifying their own grapes, using a restored historic farmhouse and 19th-century cellar for Barolo ageing. Farming centers on low yields, short pruning, multiple thinnings, manual weed control and low-impact vineyard methods, including sexual confusion to control moths. The estate grows Nebbiolo, Barbera and rare Nascetta, and follows a gentle, traditional cellar approach with spontaneous fermentations, indigenous yeasts and bacteria, long macerations for Barolo, restrained sulfur use, and traditional clarification.
