Nabygelegen is a historic estate in Wellington, South Africa, whose land was granted in 1712 and whose old cellar still contains traditional concrete fermenting tanks, stone presses and underground storage tanks. Today, James McKenzie owns and operates the property and also serves as winemaker. Its vineyards include old Chenin Blanc, with blocks planted in 1940 and four hectares dating to 1954, alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s hands-on approach includes extensive hand pruning and suckering, minimal irrigation, and harvesting and vinifying individual vineyard blocks separately. Its philosophy is that “wine is not made but grown,” with careful, low-intervention handling intended to express vineyard-specific character and concentration.
