Erich Machherndl

Austria

Family-owned since 1786, Weingut Erich Machherndl is based in Wösendorf in Austria’s Wachau, where Erich Machherndl farms terraced vineyards across 23 micro-plots. The estate is organically certified and applies biodynamic practices, with diverse soils including paragneiss, amphibolite, loess and limestone. Its focus is on Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, including traditional Wachau Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd wines, alongside more experimental cuvées. Hand harvesting, gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation, skin contact, minimal sulphur and occasional unfiltered bottling reflect a low-intervention philosophy. Machherndl seeks dry, structured and elegant wines while exploring unconventional techniques such as extended maceration and natural orange-style whites.
