Founded by Ken Volk in Templeton in 1981, Wild Horse was among the original bonded wineries of the Paso Robles area. Its first commercial wine, released in 1983, was a Pinot Noir from Santa Maria Valley—an early example that helped establish Santa Barbara as a serious Pinot Noir region. The winery became known for cool-climate, aromatic and elegant Central Coast wines. After Volk sold the brand to Fortune Brands in 2003, Wild Horse became part of GALLO in 2021. Its current focus has returned to Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir, including Santa Maria Valley wines, alongside broader Central Coast offerings.
