Dr. Hermann is a family-owned estate in Erden on the Middle Mosel, founded in 1967 by Dr. Hermann and now run by his grandson Christian Hermann, who is also the winemaker. The domaine focuses chiefly on Riesling from steep, rocky vineyards, many planted to very old ungrafted vines in sites such as Erdener Prälat, Erdener Treppchen, Erdener Herzlei and Ürziger Würzgarten. Farming is highly sustainable, with hand harvesting, selective hand sorting, low yields, restrained pruning and natural soil cultivation, and the estate is a VDP member. In the cellar, Christian Hermann follows a traditional, low-intervention approach, including spontaneous fermentation, use of fuder and stainless steel, and extended lees ageing for some wines. The wines span the full Prädikat range and are especially noted for precise, elegant sweet and noble-sweet Rieslings.
