Te Mata Estate, founded in 1896 in Hawke’s Bay, is New Zealand’s oldest winery. It remains an independent, family-owned operation, run by the Buck and Morris families since 1974. The estate comprises about 280 hectares of vineyards, producing roughly 360,000–540,000 bottles annually. A cornerstone of New Zealand wine history, its original site is the country’s first legally protected wine appellation. The winery emphasizes sustainable and regenerative viticulture, employing organic and biodynamic practices, and is a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. Winemaking focuses on precision and provenance, crafting acclaimed, age-worthy wines like Coleraine and Bullnose Syrah entirely on-site.
