Founded in 1851 by French missionaries, Mission Estate Winery is New Zealand’s oldest continuously operating winery and remains owned by the Society of Mary, a Catholic religious order, through the Greenmeadows Mission Trust Board. Based at its historic Taradale winery in Hawke’s Bay, it also farms vineyards in Marlborough, including the certified organic Mere Road site. Sustainability is central, with founding membership of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, ISO 14001 certification, solar-powered equipment and water-saving irrigation measures. Wines are crafted and bottled onsite across approachable, sustainability-led and premium ranges, including the limited-production Huchet wines, which honour pioneering winemaker Brother Cyprian Huchet. After more than four decades under Paul Mooney, winemaking is now led by Alex Roper.
