Rheingau wine country follows the Rhine and the slopes above it, with Riesling providing a vivid thread through its villages and vineyards. Rüdesheim introduces steeper western hillside settings, while Johannisberg, Winkel and Oestrich reveal other combinations of slope, river influence and soils. Hattenheim and Erbach add famous vineyard names; Kiedrich and Rauenthal bring sheltered side valleys and higher ground into the journey. Riesling can range from dry to richly sweet, with Spätburgunder offering a red-wine contrast elsewhere in the wider region. VDP membership and vineyard classifications provide one framework for exploration alongside the legally defined Rheingau origin. Read the wine’s village, vineyard and sweetness together to understand the bottle more precisely.
