Franken wines reveal a distinctive corner of Germany along the winding Main River. Silvaner is an excellent place to begin, with dry, savoury whites that sit comfortably beside food. Explore Würzburg’s limestone slopes, the vineyards around Randersacker and Escherndorf, and Iphofen’s Keuper soils near the Steigerwald. Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus and Riesling add further white-wine choices, while red wines broaden the picture. The rounded Bocksbeutel bottle is a familiar regional sight, though bottle shape alone does not explain the wine. Compare the grape, village, vineyard and sweetness; VDP classifications provide additional guidance for wines from the association’s member estates.
