Riesling.
Citrus, flowers and a lively, structured palate. Some bottles are dry; others retain a little sweetness.
Gewurztraminer.
Rose, lychee and warm spice, with a generous texture and sweetness that varies by bottling.
Pinot Gris.
Pear, yellow fruit and smoky or spicy detail, often with a broad, textured palate.
Sylvaner.
Fresh apple, citrus and a gently herbal edge in an approachable white style.
Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois can be blended; the label and producer give the detail.
Soft orchard fruit, flowers and an easy-going palate. These grapes can appear together in wines labelled Pinot Blanc.
Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and Muscat Ottonel.
Fresh grape and flowers with an aromatic, usually dry finish. Muscat aroma does not automatically mean a sweet wine.
Pinot Noir.
Red berries and cherry, from light, fresh bottles to deeper wines shaped by barrel ageing.
Alsace often puts the grape on the label, but the name alone does not tell you the sweetness. Riesling and Sylvaner can be brisk and dry; richer Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer deserve a look at the sweetness indication.
