About Douro Superior

Dry eastern Douro reds

Red

Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz.

Ripe dark fruit and spice, often with substantial structure. The best-balanced examples combine richness with a lively finish.

Higher-site whites

White

Rabigato, Viosinho and Gouveio.

Citrus, ripe pear and texture. Vineyard altitude can provide an appealing counterpoint to the region’s warmth.

Where it grows: East of the Valeira gorge, stretching towards the Spanish border around Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Barca d’Alva.

Douro Superior is the warmest and driest of the three main subregions overall. Higher vineyards and varied exposures give producers ways to retain freshness in this dramatic inland landscape.
