About Central Otago

Central Otago wine country pairs dramatic South Island scenery with expressive Pinot Noir and bright, aromatic whites. Mountain ranges shelter inland basins and river terraces, while warm summer days, cool nights and frost risk make vineyard choice especially important. Bannockburn brings a warmer, drier perspective around the Kawarau arm of Lake Dunstan; Gibbston offers a cooler, higher vineyard journey east of Queenstown. Pinot Noir is the best-known introduction, with Riesling, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay adding rewarding alternatives. Central Otago and Bannockburn are registered wine geographical indications, while other local area names add useful context. Compare the stated origin, vineyard and producer to appreciate the differences within this varied southern landscape.
