Where it grows: Along the western Black Forest foothills in Baden, including vineyard districts around Baden-Baden, Durbach and Oberkirch.

Ortenau is a Baden wine district rather than a separate PDO. Riesling, locally called Klingelberger, and Spätburgunder offer contrasting introductions to its hillsides and valleys. Granite and other geological materials appear across the landscape, with differences between individual sites. The local Riesling name identifies a grape tradition, not a guarantee of sweetness.
