Lombardy wine country ranges from Alpine terraces to lakeside hills and the broad plains of northern Italy. Nebbiolo, locally called Chiavennasca, gives Valtellina its elegant reds and the dried-grape intensity of Sforzato. Franciacorta offers traditional-method sparkling wine, while Oltrepò Pavese introduces Pinot Noir, Croatina-based Bonarda and other red and white traditions. Around Lake Garda, discover Turbiana in Lugana, Groppello-led rosés on the western shore and a wealth of broader Garda wines. Bergamo adds Valcalepio and sweet red Moscato di Scanzo; Mantua brings Lambrusco and local IGT stories. The lakes, mountains and plains create very different growing conditions. Follow each denomination separately to appreciate the grapes, sweetness and winemaking behind this unusually varied regional wine journey.
