Australia’s great fortified-wine treasure chest, alongside bold Durif and Shiraz.
Muscat à Petits Grains Rouge.
Sweet raisin, orange peel and toffee, with greater concentration in longer-aged tiers.
Muscadelle.
Sweet malt, tea leaf and dried fruit in a rich fortified style. Topaque is the name to look for on current Australian labels.
Dense dark fruit and firm tannins, often a powerful companion to slow-cooked dishes.
Ripe berries and spice, usually with a generous, full-flavoured palate.
Rutherglen Muscat and Topaque are distinct: Muscat uses Muscat à Petits Grains Rouge, while Topaque uses Muscadelle. Their sweet, wood-aged richness is different from the region’s dry reds.
